Got this at a yard sale guy said used for reenactment but said blade was dug years back and modern handle attached. Was this type Blade used in ACW ?Not sure on the stamping most likely made by the guy that did the handle. 20 bucks so I jumped on it thanks in advance.

It looks like a REAL Bowie knife (Col. James Bowie of Alamo fame) - a large knife made from a sword blade. OK, it's only ONE of the legends of the origin of that knife - but that is exactly what this one looks like - a cut-down curved sword blade.

I do not believe the markings are period or authentic. As a rule, no genuine Confederate blade has either a stamped "CS" or ""CSA" or a date. And die stamped unit identification is never on a real Confederate blade. Because of the evenness of the rust patina on the blade and markings I suspect it is artificially aged.

Here is a great resource and archive of fakes, Scrolling through it you will see many examples of unauthentic die stamped markings and artificial aging and maybe even a Bowie/short sword or 2 all similar to yours.

But $20 still ain't bad

I was thinking same thing I suspected the maker of the handle did the stamping because what I researched was what you said about the stamping. I can still see a few letters or something in the old blade was hoping someone knew what these may represent my buddy that passed away was in the SCV and thought the blade may have been correct. I'm going to try to find a D guard and fix it to look more like the real deal thanks.

As legitimate as a $3 bill. Markings are spurious and do not match the patina.
Yes that is what I was thinking gjpratt quoted Because of the evenness of the rust patina on the blade and markings I suspect it is artificially aged. But it looks more like the markings were stamped long after the sword was aged hard to tell in the photos plus and its has some mark or letters but my eyes are fading on me but I can see something never seen till I took the photos. To the right of the C maybe what ever they used when they made the sword had that code or the Reb marked his acronym on it?

I would put it in the category of a fantasy piece. The marking are spurious to say the least but WTH $20, what is that 4 gallons of gas:cold:
