Shiloh Recommendations

Considering a trip from Western Maryland down to Shiloh during my school's spring break. We would probably be down there multiple days and I was wondering what anyone might recommend, aside from the battlefield itself, who has been there recently; things like a good place to stay, other nearby CW sites, and places to eat. This would be completely new to me and I'm open to any suggestions you all may have.

Watching this thread as well. I am planning a cross country motorcycle trip for next year and plan to hit Shiloh on the way west, with possibly Vicksburg as well.

Nobody has chimed in yet so I will kick in. Of course you have Shiloh NMP itself. Depending on how off-road you wanna go, you could easily spend 2 days there. Nearby are Corinth, Savannah, Brice's Crossroads, Okolona and Iuka with multiple things to do at each. Corinth is a must-see to understand the Battle of Shiloh.

Hagy's Catfish Hotel is a must-stop for dining. Hotels in Corinth are the best place to stay.

You will have picked the ideal time to visit Shiloh, while seeing it in all seasons is enjoyable; the Spring gives you a feel of the conditions at the time of the battle. Corinth is the ideal spot to use as a base camp as it has all of the lodging, shopping and dining facilities required and it is about a 20 minute drive from the park. We are fortunate to have a number of members who either live, work or frequently visit the area who can give you more helpful information. Paging @16th Alabama, @Ole Miss, @ucvrelics and @TomP. BTW, TomP is a Ranger at the Corinth Interpretive Center who always proves to be very informative and helpful. Also, a stop at Mr. DeBerrys Civil War Museum is a must when you are in the area.

If you are driving, you will probably pass through Savannah, Tennessee on the way down. The Tennessee River Museum, Grant Circle and the Cherry Mansion are worth a look. I visited those in June 2017. Cherry Mansion is a private residence so you can't go in but it is right on the river and there is a historical marker there. The Tennessee River Museum has a great display of Civil War artifacts.

A great B&B in Corinth, "The General's Quarters" We just were there in December 2020 great hosts.

In Corinth was a nice restaurant Vicari, https://www.vicariitaliangrill.com/ right down the street from C&D Jarnigin https://www.jarnaginco.com/

In the evening was a nice rooftop spot called The Conservatory for libations https://www.conservatorycorinth.com/

Near Shiloh, Hagy's for sure! :hungry:

Anyone been to Buford Pusser museum?
Always wondered…..
It's a "trip " for sure.

I visited during the mid 2000's.
It's not the Smithsonian ... but a virtual time capsule of an early 1970's middle class "ranch house".

" Avocado green" shag carpet and the whole 1970's decor, ect.
But Buford Pusser's home has remained untouched since his death.

It's not for everyone, but worth a look for a Sheriff Pusser enthusiast.

My recommendation would be to focus on the multiple Civil War sites in the Shiloh/Corinth area.

One of the sites listed on the brochure for Corinth is Davis Bridge Battlefield. There is not a lot to see there but the terrain that almost trapped General Van Dorn on his retreat from the Battle of Corinth.
If you make it that far West, then the drive along Hiway 57 takes you down the road used by many Union troops traveling both ways between Corinth and Memphis.
I could give you a tour of the cavalry battles of Moscow, Rossville(La Fayette Station) and Collierville, TN. You would be only 20 minutes outside Memphis.

We are seriously considering Corinth as our base of operations and staying in a hotel there. Curious as to what the city is like? Is it a safe place to visit, are there places to avoid?

During our Shiloh gatherings, we have been there probably a half dozen times and have never had any problems. There are restaurants, hotels, stores and things to see there, plus the park is only about a 20 minute drive away. I believe that Corinth would serve your purposes just fine.

Looking like our trip is a go. Considering going to Parker's Crossroads and Brice's Crossroads while we are down there. Anybody ever been to either of those places, are they worth checking out? Also, is there anything in the way of battlefield to see at Iuka?

Thanks for this thread. I'm going at the end of May. I won't have time for much besides the Shiloh Battlefield and Corinth Interpretive Center. I will look the suggestions over carefully for possible add -ons. I am highly anticipating Hagy's from the great number of recommendations about it! I purchased Timothy B. Smith's book Shiloh National Military Park to read the history of the park and monuments. After Shiloh I am going to Chattanooga and then to East TN to visit my kids.

All I can add.

@AlexPensFan86 I apologize for coming late to the party but somehow or another I did not discover your request till this evening. I am suggesting that you should contact Kevin, @16thAL and Ashley, @MS2623 as they live in Corinth and are great resources for any visitor and they love sharing their hometown with all.

I have stayed multiple times at the Hampton Inn on Hwy 72 and recommend it highly. If possible we might be able to meet up when you visit the park so let us know.

You have been told of Hagy's but here are two other excellent restaurants for you to visit. Top of the River, Hwy 57, Michie, TN and Taylor's in Corinth on Hwy 72. Enjoy the food!

Where in Maryland do you live? My sister lives in West Friendship. Have a safe trip and enjoy your visit. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate
Regards
David

Suggested Itinerary:

1) Visit the Corinth Civil War Interprative Center for a solid grounding in the importance of Shiloh, Pittsburg Landing and Corinth, MS. The railroad crossing in this small North Mississippi town was the reason for this tremendous battle. Ranger Tom Parson, @TomP,a Shiloh Ranger is located here and is an excellent source of information and assistance on all aspects of this campaigan and its participants.

2) The Shiloh NMP Visitor Center has an excellent 49 minute film, Shiloh - Fiery Trial, coupled with a small but very interesting museum which enhance one's visit.

3) Next to the Visitor's Center is in my opinion the most beautiful National Cemetery in the World. The 10 acre Shiloh National Cemetery holds the remains of over 3,500 Civil War soldiers, the majority of which are unknown. This web site provides additional information about this cemetery.*

4) Hagy's Catfish Hotel is a must stop during you Shiloh Visit! Located 1 mile North of the Park, this restaurant is open for dinner or supper---except Mondays---and truly a refreshing break from traipsing the Park in July!!!

5) The Iowa Monument is the tallest one in the Park and is on the way to the Visitor's Center.

6) The United Daughters of the Confederacy's Confederate Monument is quite simply one of the most beautiful tributes to soldiers in the world. A must see.

7) The Park is easily visited by car with most of the major sites on and off the road.

8) I would recommend visiting the 5 known Confederate Burial Trenches, 2 of which are on the side of the road, with the other 3 requiring short walks. These trenches were established just days after the battle as Union troops hurriedly buried the Confederate dead.

If you are interested in further details about the Confederate Burial Trenches here is a link to an existing thread about this subject.**

9) I am unsure of what else I can provide at this time but please contact me if you wish. I would be pleased to assist in any way possible.

10) Guided Tour. If you are interested in securing a guide for you visit I have 2 recommendations. Listed alphabetically. I have had the pleasure of having both men lead a tour of the battlefield and they are excellent!

Larry DeBerry at Shiloh Tours and Museum is a very qualified man and knows the Battle and Field very well. His contact info is here***

Miller Civil War Tours is owned by Starke Miller who is also very qualified tour guide and can be contacted here****

11) Brices Crossroads Battlefield about 45 minutes South of Corinth off of Hwy 45 S
