I recently viewed a three-hour interview with Shelby Foote (http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/165823-1).

From his Memphis home, Book TV interviewed Mr. Foote about his writing and love for the Civil War. He was a charming man who knew his craft well.

I enjoyed hearing him so much, that I checked out his audio book from our library (Stars in Their Courses: The Gettysburg Campaign, June-July 1863). The author himself reads the book for his hearers. Excellent stuff!

Anyone seen this interview before?

Haven't seen it, and unfortunately I'm not going to over my dial-up connection (yes, I'm the ONE). But I'd love to. Shelby Foote rocks.

Does he discuss getting cashiered during WWII?

He went AWOL to see an Irish girl, whom he later married, when based in Belfast and she was 2 miles beyonda 20 mile range from base, he was CM, and dismissed, he re enlisted in the Marine Corp, after returning to the states.

There's a nice collection of letters between him and Walker Percy. They discuss writing, Faulkner, the South, and everyday things. It's very interesting glimpse into his thinking about history and his craft.
