Born: Mount Carbon, Pa., February 22, 1834
Died: July 28, 1909
Occupation: Railroad Superintendent and President
War Service: 1861 - 1862 Hauled South over country roads about 100 cars and 16 locomotives, mostly from the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, for repair and use on the Confederate railroads of Virginia and North Carolina. The rolling stock had been captured by Thomas (future Stonewall) Jackson on the line between Martinsburg and Harpers Ferry. Appointed Captain in the Quartermaster Department in late 1861.
1862 Completed and ran the Centreville Military Railroad in Northern Virginia. Repaired the B&O RR locomotives. July, 1862 established the Confederate Locomotive Shops in Raleigh, N. C. to maintain the Government's rolling stock.
1863 Upon the closing of the Locomotive Shops, was assigned Superintendent of the Charlotte & South Carolina RR.
1864 Was assigned as Transportation Coordinator of western South Carolina.
1865 Helped with the evacuation of Columbia, S. C. in front of Sherman.
PostWar: Superintendent of Baltimore & Ohio RR and President of several other RRs.
