Interesting cartridge find at a CW era Military Road camp site in Dakota Territory.
The Sage Ammunition Works 56-50 was the only cartridge manufactured during the CW years that had a head stamp…SAW.
Sage Ammunition Works was only in business from 1864 -1866. They had a government contract to produce the 56-56 and the 56-50 rim fire cartridge for the Spencer rifle.
Online research reveals why I am finding these cartridges on a military camp site in Dakota Territory, but does not provide much information on how long the military used the 56-50 Spencer rimfire.
Wondering if the CW era ammo experts can provide more information on the military's use of the Spencer 56-50 rim fire rifle and cartridge.
Thank you for your input.
