Same soldier?

These 2 period photos, the left photo is from the famous camp dining photo, of a NY engineers unit in bealeton va, the right photo is just a random photo I stumbled across,,but to me, they seem like they could be the same soldier,,one photo taken a bit earlier. The guys nose looks like an exact match, his mustache, the tip of his cap. He just looks a bit heavier in one, and a bit more gaunt in the other. I can't be certain, but to me, I think it's the same soldier, and I'd imagine a few years of cw can sink a man's cheeks in.

The nose, shape of the eyes, lower lip and something about the cheeks looks similar, but the hairline, ears, and overall shape of the face, not so much. To me it looks more like it could be two different people than the same person. There were millions of Union soldiers.

For what it's worth, they're wearing different caps--one with a flat brim and one with a curved brim. That's not to say that a man couldn't have had more than one cap during his service....

I will buck the trend here and say I think it is the same soldier. The photo on the right is not as clear and I think that and accounts for the variations. His hair looks dark at the hairline in front of his ear and the light appearance could just be glare of some nature. If it isn't the same guy, maybe it's his brother 😉

Both look to have similar facial features to me (if you allow for the slight differences in image definition and brightness - e.g. one moustache looks darker than the other).

Would not be surprised to find they are the same person. If not, they bear a close resemblance to each other.
