Tony Horwitz, the author of Confederates in the Attic, died very unexpectedly yesterday at the very young age of 60. I had the good fortune of doing a book signing with him in 1998 and found him to be a good guy, quick with a good story and a hearty laugh, and unfailingly generous with his time. He was on a book tour when he died. He will be missed. RIP, Tony.

I met Tony Horwitz here in Litchfield Connecticut a few years ago when he gave a presentation on John Brown and Harpers Ferry. I was able to speak to him for a goodly time and the conversation flowed freely. I immediately was drawn to Tony's depth of knowledge and relaxing personality. A gentleman through & through. RIP.

My deepest sympathies to his family. Another great civil warrior has also past this month, Dr. Richard Sommers, author of "Richard Redeemed." He was well known for his encyclopedic knowledge of the Civil War and for his many professional contributions to AHEC in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. His unequalled civil war scholarship will truly be missed. David.

I was sorry and shocked to hear this. The retired bookseller came out in me though, and as he was beginning his tour on his new book I think signed copies will be quite scarce, though if anyone wants one I found one copy on ABE, though the seller might have more in stock.

My friend and fellow Central Virginia Battlefields Trust board member, Robert Lee Hodge, on Tony's passing. Rob is the Confederate living historian depicted on the dust jacket of Confederates in the Attic. Rob knew Tony well.
