S&K marked scabbard - questions

I have had a Palmetto "Columbia SC" marked saber for years, and recently had it out for the first time in a while. It came from Walterboro, South Carolina, and is in a scabbard that at some point was thinly nickel plated, so I imagine it was a treasured keepsake of some family. I know that S&K supplied these swords, but this scabbard is marked on the drag S&K over GM. I've not seen that before, in fact I don't recall seeing one with the scabbard marked at all. While obviously "correct" for an S&K sword, I don't know that this scabbard was originally matched to this saber. So, are any of you familiar with the S&K over GM mark? Could it be original to a Palmetto Armory sword? I am thinking it might be from the 1840s contract with S&K, when Ames could not supply enough for the war with Mexico. Ideas?

My book on inspector's marks lists only one inspector with initials G.M and he inspected rifles after he got out of his military unit in 1863, I think.
