This 6 7/8" tall Armstrong shell was pretty rusty so today I cleaned it up
a bit so I could display it. Some wire wheeling, some rust converter, a
coat of Renaissance wax and a lot of elbow grease. I was surprised to
see how well preserved the shell was under all the rust.

It was a purchase. I don't know where it was found.
Conversations about Civil War Armstrong shells have always seemed to open with the argument that some people claim that there were no Armstrong shells used during the Civil War even though there were a small number of unfired Armstrong shells found buried on Lee's Retreat to Appomattox Route. However, these were reported as having brass studs and a length of 7 1/2", so the mystery continues.:cannon:

Interesting that the studs are in line. Certainly with the Armstrong naval ordnance the studs were offset by the angle of the rifling to minimise the projectile "wobbling" in the bore.
