Rowboat questions

Are the three round things hanging over the side of the rowboat some kind of "bumpers" or protective devices? What is the proper name for them? What are they made of? Solid, hollow, inflatable? Thanks.
 
If I didn't know any better, I would have assumed it was the men's canteens.

But I know better than to assume I know all that much...

I'm intrigued by the civilian gentleman with the big pipe and the stick on the left of the rowboat. Could it be the sketch artist, Alfred R. Waud? He did a sketch of the Onondaga:

Holy heck, good eye! He sure looks like Waud, doesn't he? Crazy to think he was working on this sketch at the time.

Interesting observation but I can't say say either way.
