Rosette?

Found near cavalry site. Is it period? I think it's a lion or monkey not sure.

This style lion looks like a rosette and the back is missing its bar. The two spots on the back look like the breaking points of the bar vs an import buckle that would have the connectors on the side

Ok that makes sense , any idea on age range ? I was hoping it was part of confederate lion buckle but it doesn't match up
 
It is a civilian rosette with lion head. You have to remember back in that period everyone had a horse. This piece came from someone with means. Nice piece
