Richmond

I'm considering a trip to Norfolk and Richmond in early January for a couple of concerts (and just to have a few days away from reality). How much time do I need to see the civil war sites in and around Richmond? Also, is it too cold in January to explore the battlefields and outdoor sites in the Richmond area? Thanks in advance!

I attended a Historian convention in Richmond. There is alot to see in the general area.

Over the years I've visited Richmond at least 3 or 4 times. (Always in the summer, so I guess January might be a bit colder!) Anyway, a good place to start would be the CW museum at the Tredegar Iron Works along the James River in downtown Richmond. It's also part of the Richmond National Military Park, which covers a good part of the battle sites of the Seven Days and Overland Campaigns, and some of the Richmond area based sites of the Petersburg Campaign. Back in the city itself, there is also Hollywood Cemetery, the site of the Belle Isle POW camp, and other neighborhoods of interest like Shockoe Bottom and the Fan District. To really do all that would probably require at least a week, so if time is limited its probably best to focus on one specific area of interest.

I know Fort Darling is possibly reachable, and whether Fort Hamilton is or not, I am unsure. Chaffin's Bluff?

Not familiar with "modern" Richmond, is there anything left of or to see at Rockett's Landing. Anyhow did that area aquire it's name?Also a question or two on Belle Isle. Is there anything to see there?

For those in the know, how long would I need to tour all of the battlefields and sites that are both in Richmond and within a two-hour drive from the city? I've never been to Richmond, so I figure I might as well make it count if I go forward with a trip there.

I've yet to visit everything Richmond has to offer, despite being a Virginian, (terrible, I know!) but I can say definitely take a day to tour Hollywood Cemetery. I've been a few times now, and still end up spending all day there. If you really want to tour everything, you might want to take at least a week off.
I'm actually not far from Norfolk. It gets pretty cold down here in January, but snow is maybe a once a year thing. Richmond gets a little more, from my understanding.

Of all the sites that I saw in Richmond, the Hollywood Cemetery still remains my favorite stop.
