Revolver Identification

Looks like a Colt model 1855 side hammer.

I don't believe it to be a Colt Root 1855 Hammer is on opposite side.

It is a Colt Root model. Remember, the photographic processes of the age reversed the image, so when viewed as a positive, the hammer would show on the far side of the image.

It would reverse the direction, but not flip it over. Just think how a plate letters are backwards, but it doesn't flip the plate over so the hooks are showing.

I believe it is a 2nd Model Warner Pocket Revolver. The revolver definitely has a thin metal trigger guard, which rules out the Colt Root revolver.

I like the Colt Root Model. An interesting little pistol. The Warner looks like a Colt ripoff, while similar it is different. I do see they were ordered to cease production of he revolver twice, once due to a Colt lawsuit, and the second lawsuit by Smith and Wesson.

It is my Colt Root #2 1856 5 shot .28 cal. 3.5" oct. barrel

This can also be a problem with military-themed hard images because the gilding can cover up helpful details in identification like buttons and belt plates. A case in point: This ambrotype in my collection is identified (insufficiently, as far as I'm concerned) as James R. Neal from Georgia. This is definitely an early-war image and had it not been gilded it *might* show him wearing the rare and elusive Georgia State Plate on his belt, further strengthening the identification; alas, it's now impossible to see either it or the numerous brass buttons that have been applied indiscriminately all over what was likely a civilian coat.

It's a great photo and all but I can't help but wonder, why is she posing with a revolver? What kind of message is she trying to convey in the photograph?

I was thinking maybe it's a photo for her loved one, if I was him, I'd seriously think about not returning home again, doesn't look like a woman you'd want to upset.
