Forrest Researching General Nathan B Forest

I've never seen this photo of Forrest before. Do you have any others from the series?

I forgot to put the credits on it - it is from the Hagan Collection. His website is here:

He has a wonderful photo of Forrest as a private, too - never have seen that! This side view one, though, on Mr Hagan's site, has Forrest's hands in his lap and you can clearly see his right hand has a really bad scar and puffed up skin - getting a gun knocked out of your hand with a saber might do that!

I just called the Richmond Library asking for any records of the Forrest Collection. It was not listed on the computer now. They are going to check to see if there are insurance records for that collection. I'm praying there are records if nothing else how was it listed. Jennifer in the archives department is helping me with this search.

Thank you all so much for the leads and info. One lead can lead to another. Oh and did find out the library moved to it's new building in the early 80s. And there could have been a sale at the old location of things they wouldn't use.

Thanks for the link Diane. Why is NBF rumored to have feared his brother Bill?

Did Bill kill more of the enemy than NBF? Surely not!

"No man alive knows when Bill is going to get mad," Forrest observed one day. Bill was well known to be a decent, generous fellow with an amazing temper that was completely unpredictable, and when he lost it somebody usually died. Bill didn't kill anywhere near as many as his brother because he was not targeted like the general was...but he was a much more dangerous man.

Here's a nugget for you @diane...

Who is the only man that Bill Forrest was afraid of?? No not his brother Bedford but a fellow named Jim Millaney. He had a reputation for violence and was known as a most dangerous and bad man. See below.

 Now that's just one mean man - Bill had a temper but he wasn't stupid!

Howdy and welcome. I am one of those who believes you have a Forrest image. I can't comment too much about the uniform tunic he appears to be wearing, but I am pretty sure that's a later edit to the photo. Anyway, it's a great find in my opinion. Thanks for showing it to us!

Just pondering over an idea. Earlier when talking about the wreath around the stars on RE Lee's Uniform. If taken after Lee's death this could have been a way to honor him. As soon as I read the word wreath I pictured a funeral wreath. I knew what that mean military but still pictured it. Been thinking about that all day.

That's an interesting thought, Kay. I'm more inclined to think the folks who did the picture just wanted to put Forrest into a uniform similar to one Lee wore to bring the two closer together in memory. Lee didn't have a wreath around his stars, just the three for a colonel. Forrest, however, wore the whole general's uniform with all the embroidery and wreaths and right number of buttons! In 1868 I think it was still illegal to wear a Confederate uniform or parts of them, but Forrest never put one on again until he was buried. Lee altered his to fit civilian style.

A week or so ago I spoke with the "Friends of the Library" at Richmond. They didnt ever have a sale, but the VA library did once. They also had lots of different collections. So that is where I'm at now on my search.

I hope to be back to my research here soon. Trying to wrap up some loose ends on a case.

Just got to know more about my photo.

Thanks everyone and I will keep you all posted.

Kay
