Forrest Researching General Nathan B Forest

Hey Kay  Welcome from the Ulysses S. Grant forum :grant: and I'd like to call up our residents experts on Forrest, @7th Mississippi Infantry and @diane, to help you with this question. An image of the pic would be enormously helpful, and it seems like you think it's worth preserving/sharing.

Thanks for joining in.

Well, there's definitely still a fierceness in his eyes here, and I have never seen this photo before either. Thanks so much for sharing!
I have looked everywhere I could think of over the years. I have never seen this photo either. I'm wondering if maybe it was taken at the library when they took the collection.
Thank you for talking with me and everyone who posted back. I'm computer dumb and on a cell phone now. So I'm slow for a bit, fast learner.

Thank you, Kay Frances! We need to give @ucvrelics a yell. That's Forrest all right, but the uniform is Robert E Lee's. There were a number of altered photos of Forrest made for various reasons.
I did notice the uniform was different then the others I saw him wearing. To be Robert E Lee's. Wow see I'm the 13th cousin to Mary Ann Randolph Curtis. I'm smiling here

The first thing I thought when you posted the 'sideways' image and the first thing I caught site of was the uniform (before I saw the face) was that it was going to be an image of RE Lee. Then, of course I saw the face and there's no doubt it's Forrest's face. So great pick up by 7th Miss, though probably not that hard to a trained eye. Still pretty sure I haven't seen this image of his face before, even if there's been some skulduggery going on with the rest of the photo.

Also typing on my phone so can sympathise!

The picture in question was taken in 1868, one of a series of photos he had done at Matthew Brady's studio when he visited New York for the Democratic Convention. That particular photo has been altered many times, different uniforms put on and the hair whitened much more than it was then. I believe it was used more for various newspapers, articles, reunions and other publicity items. This is a photo done by Matthew Brady in 1868 - very different.

I've never seen this photo of Forrest before. Do you have any others from the series?

The problem I have with saying this is RE Lee's uniform is the wreath around the stars, there are no photos of Lee with the wreath around the stars on his collar.

Yes! That's something I should have noted - it seemed to me the idea in altering the photo was to connect Lee and Forrest.
