Interesting. My Bright line was in Burke Co. NC. Jesse moved to Blount Co. Tn between 1819 and 1830. His brother, Daniel, moved from Burke/McDowell Co. NC to Murray Co, Ga between 1836 and 1838. I don't have any Hammontrees in my records, but I do have some Hammonds in Ky in 1845. A Hammond married a Bright in Knox Co, Ky in 1893

I believe your relative was a Union Soldier from East Tennessee. The Confederate 10th Tennessee Cav. was organized in Columbia, Tennessee, and served under N.B. Forrest. There were several Union Regiments from East Tennessee. Thank you for your service.
I took a quick peek into James Morgan of Tenessee on Fold 3. The only hit I get back references James L. (sometimes S.) Morgan of the Tenessee 10th Infantry division (Union).
It very well could be this James Morgan. Alvin Gillem was an East Tennessean, but they were organized in Middle Tennessee.
Thanks for the info. I would concur with you statement. Being a Union soldier is more than likely. I've just skimmed Confederate lists, and alot of James Morgan's none really matches his stats. Now I have more hunting thru family items to prove his service.
Good Luck! I had to do a similar thing and several kind folk on this forum provided details gleaned from a photo that led to a revision of our family history. Unfortunately, most ppl related to me that had the wrong history weren't receptive to the "revision". It happens. In the end, the soldier is getting a grave marker with his proper service reflected.
Thank you. History dosen't lie, no matter what you say or try. I've had genealogy items "debunked". I was told by a local author's wife one day. Family members may remember a event differently than your perspective. But don't discount their impression, write it down also into the annals of the family history. That's what I'm hoping someone here can help spread light on this. And your veteran family member is being properly recognized.
You're right that "History doesn't lie" but historians (and genealogists) may be mistaken or inaccurate. A fact is real--an impression, not so much.
Sometimes historians and genealogists do get things wrong. Repeated histories ought to be based on facts--but there are inaccurate narratives (or popular wisdoms) that are considered "history" but which are based on non-facts. It is our business--as history buffs--to delve into those "recorded" historical events that just don't make sense

Yes, I was reading into it. My mom has done alot of family genealogy. Her side of the family is deeply rooted in TN. After talking to her, she believes that they we're not southern sympathizers. So I can with a great pride he was Union. If I was alive during that time, my heart would have been a abolitionist.
