This recipe for Red Pottage is from "Old Time Recipes To Enjoy", "The Kentucky Explorer" It is different but one that could be worth trying.

Red Pottage

One half pound of dried beans, one cup of tomato puree, one beet, two tablespoons of butter, two onions, piece of celery, one small piece of parsnip, two quarts of good stock. Put butter in saucepan, then add onions, celery, parsnip. Cook a little, do not let it get very brown, then add dried beans, tomato puree, slice beet, and add pepper and salt to taste and then stock, boil until all is tender. Rub through a fine sieve, reheat, then serve.
