Looking at Forbes (early in the movie, not yet a major) shoulder straps. It is a noticeably lighter shade of blue. Is this just a costuming error or does this lighter shade actually denote something?

The light blue was regulation for infantry, the dark for staff. Being officers had to outfit themselves there were often things not quite regulation and you see variations in period photos. Now did they research every detail of his uniform and was it 100% correct? That I don't know.

Believe the plain shoulder strap signifies a 2nd. Lt. and the field color shade (sky blue on the strap) indicates this officer belongs to the infantry. (Am no expert on this, though).
