Question About a Hat....

Whenever I watch the movie "Glory", I always wonder about this officer's hat. Seems to me to be a rather wide brim. Does this type of hat specify any kind of specific rank, position or unit? Was it just something that maybe this officer preferred to wear or even a find in the props department at the studio.
...another thought, "Tropical" hat?

Whatever it is......I want one

If I am not mistaken this hat was either picked by this gentleman out of props for the movie or given to him by one of the costume people according to JamesN's excellent piece about his involvement in this movie. James posted a very detailed blow by blow account of his experiences on the movie set. A must read for any Glory fan. I also recall James saying that this gentleman was the son of the Scottish singer "Donavan" so maybe that had something to do with his selection.

A hat...its look and comfort are in the eye of the beholder. Perhaps this man thought the hat was "groovie". Me personally I think its size makes it outlandish and cartoonish but to each his own.
