The Confederates used them, as did the Federals, but from what I recall, the Blue Bellies used more experimental grenades, and Johnny Reb used basically bowling balls filled with powder.
Both side employed a Badminton shuttle **** looking grenade, but neither were very effective
Most of the Yankee handgrenades were called Ketchums. They look very similiar to a lawn jart and about the same size, maybe a little shorter. The main problem with them was they they used a percussion cap to set it off and the head of the grenade had to hit dead on or the charge didnt detonate. There was a few instances were confederates put blankets on their trenches to catch the grenades and throw them back.
