Purchasing Black Powder

Wild Tangent alert:
Speaking of bulk black powder, I often wondered why neither side was able to come up with a practical hand grenade during the war. I know the Federals employed some at Vicksburg, but from what I have read it was more like a hot potato.

A black powder charge is a piece of cake to make up, they were able to cast iron for the body of the grenade and either short duration fuses or funnels and percussion caps would have been able to be used as the firing devises.

Granted, the effects would be more psychological than physical, but in tightly packed formations at 20-30 yards 80-100 grenades lobbed into a formation would have caused a great deal of chaos and confusion.

Dave it is my memory that confederates not federals used crude hand grenades while defending a redoubt..

The Confederates used them, as did the Federals, but from what I recall, the Blue Bellies used more experimental grenades, and Johnny Reb used basically bowling balls filled with powder.

Both side employed a Badminton shuttle **** looking grenade, but neither were very effective

Mostly it all depends on what quantity your looking for. If you only want to buy a couple of pounds, check your local gun shops. They don't set the powder up on the shelves like they do cased ammo, they have to keep it in a powder magazine. You have to ask for it. I found the cost is anywhere from $16-$20. Now if your looking to buy a large amount such as 15-50 pounds then go with one of the suppliers mentioned. The cost will be quite a bit lower but your goin to have enough powder for the next 10-15 years if your infantry. The other option is to go in with a few buddies and split the order.

The Battle of Fort Sanders in Knoxville, TN, Nov. 29, 1863, was a classic example of using artillery as improvised hand grenades. As the attacking Confederates piled into an unexpected ditch while assaulting the fort, being esentially trapped, the Federals began hurling lit artillery shells into the ditch producing incredible carnage. It was all over in 20 minutes.

I would add.. Did you need cannon grade or musket grade...? It's all rated in F's.. GOEX is a good brand.

I know you typically get what you pay for and black powder is not something you want to compromise on quality with. But, how does the bulk price of GOEX compare to others of reasonably high quality? Or, does it depend on the distributor? My unit has been purchasing their black powder from Powder Inc. for quite sometime. If there is a cheaper product of comparable quality I would like to know about it, but it may not exist. Thanks!
