Hello,
I am trying to help a friend out. Is there anywhere to purchase a repro saber out reasonably priced and accurate that you could get by with at a reenactment and do cutting tests with?

Thank you,
John

What is your price range

Reasonably priced and accurate usually don't go together although strictly for reenacting purposes just about all the big mainstream sutlers sell reproduction cavalry sabres for under 100$. I'd try Regimental Quartermaster, Blockade Runner, or even C&C for one of those. I don't know how much cutting you'd be able to do with one of those though, I'm not sure if they'd cut butter. 😅 If he wants something really accurate I'd consider an original, they aren't horribly expensive if you shop around and know what you're looking at.

"Cutting" what he wants to look cool guy in the neighborhood whacking weeds with it? Or to stand in front of his door with it to keep the Mother In-Law away plus the kids that TP his property during Halloween because he hands out cheap or no candy!

You can try Kult of Athena. If you look on their web site they do have reviews. Also, on the internet you can find cutting tests of some of the repos being offered. Lots of their civil war stuff is around $200, more or less.

They aren't up to the standards of the originals for sure, but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

It's like buying muskets I guess. You can get an 18th c a trade gun made in India or a REALLY good more authentic one from some dude down south....for double, triple, quadruple the price of some cheap rosewood stock piece of **** from Bombay or whatever.

Is there anyone out there that makes quality swords or knives for Civil War
