A friend of mine's son found this button outside in a pile of freshly excavated dirt along a fence near a field in Southern Ohio. I'm no expert, but I thought it might have a Civil War connection either as an original item or a reproduction of an original. Does anyone have an idea what it might be or where it could have come from. I'm sorry, I don't have the actual dimensions but it is "smaller than a quarter" across. I can get additional info if anyone has an idea.

Thanks!

I would say it is a navy button I looked it up in Alberts buttton book and there are some that look similar but not exactly. There were many variations made by different makers. Is there a makers make on the back that would help. Add another pic

I'll check and see if I can get more info. Thanks for the help!

These buttons were used by the Navy for many years. Can you post a photo of the back-mark? That will give a date.

Sorry not much to see on the back. All US Buttons changed I believe during WWII, the Eagle faces the other direction. The reason or myth I was told was so the US eagle did not want to be looking the same direction as the German eagle.

I know it's been awhile, but I finally received some more photos of the button, posted below. I don't know if they will lead to a more concrete conclusion as to its origins or not...
