Recent Bragg discussions on here made me want to poll the site to find out who the worst commander of a field army was, according to opinions.

I stipulate that they must have commanded an army in battle. An official army, not a temporary detached corps or division.

Vote for 4, and we'll see who gather's the most attention.

Seriously, if the first vote that is cast is not for Floyd you are unfamiliar with his leadership. Doesn't matter if he was West Point or not. He was the worst C.S. General! I didn't see that I could cast four votes but the other three would have been Bragg, VanDorn and ... Unfamiliar with the leadership of two of them, so I'll leave the last for y'all to fill in.

I believe Leonidas Polk commanded an army, the one that invaded Kentucky in 1861. That one mistake cost the CSA the war. With Kentucky in the Confederacy and out of the Union the CSA had a better than even chance of having won that war. That one mistake cost the South dearly. No other Confederate commander ever did as much damage as Polk did

Floyd is the absolute worst. Hands down.

I'll leave this one alone, as well.

LOL! I think I'm with you. It's an interesting question and poll, but compared to :lee:, they all suffer, no?

In agreement with cash and gunny, Floyd does strike me as someone who didn't belong in command of a corporal's guard. In agreement with kevikens (and Donald Stoker), Pillow and Polk did the Confederacy the most harm in a single mistake on Sept 4, 1861.
Beyond that, I really don't know.
But to flip things for a moment, why should Lee or Jackson be on this list?
