IMG_20170503_185303.jpg I purchased a frame with a homemade painting at an auction. Upon tearing it apart I found this handsome fellow hiding behind it. I would love to know more! Assuming it is civil war era.. Thanks!!!

Welcome to the forum. Can you post a picture of your find?

Very fascinating photo of a mature gentleman in uniform. This is not a young Civil War soldier. However, he might be a veteran posing later in life, but I don't recognize his uniform. Perhaps a European gentleman? Perhaps a member of some local militia, many years after the war? I honestly don't know. But it's a fabulous photo!

Can you remove this image from the glass (to remove the glare) and take some close up photos of the buttons, belt buckle and collar insignia ?

That would be a great help in identifying his uniform.

This is not a uniform worn by United States soldiers. Finding what country this image is from, could take some time.

While I agree it's not a regular US Army uniform, I tend to agree with @Patrick H 's suggestion that it may be post War local militia, military academy, European or even South/Central American.

A couple of years ago, the combined knowledge of the members solved a similar mystery regarding a cap.

Turned out . . . it was a Venezuelan kepi. :smoke:

I just read that and am more confused... So he's not actual service? I have no clue about any of this and feel I have dug myself deeper...lol. but I really appreciate your help and I have even more research now I guess...
