April 24 is Pigs in a blanket day. Pigs in a blanket are defined as hot dogs, Vienna sausages, cocktail or breakfast link sausages wrapped in biscuit dough, pancake or croissant dough and baked.
Some historians write that pigs in a blanket date back to the 1600's. Field laborers in England placed meat inside of dough to take with them to the fields for their lunches.
The earliest written record of this dish appeared in "Betty Crocker's Cooking for Kids" which was published in 1957. There are testimonials from some who said they enjoyed this dish before the publication of this cookbook.
Others claim the pig in a blanket was created at a diner in Oklahoma in 1960's. Others claim it started in the Far East, where Asian cultures placed fish in a similar roll and later Americans copied this dish with hot dogs and biscuits.
Wherever pigs in the blanket first began, they are a very tasty and popular dish.
Have pigs in a blanket today and celebrate them!
