The "Peanuts Lunch Bag Cook Book" is one of my favorite cook books in my collection. My son got it at a book sale at his elementary school. It has recipes by June Dutton and cartoons by Charles M. Schulz. I thought about the book today since was National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day. There are several unusual recipes for peanut butter sandwiches. I remember we (son and I) made them and they were good.

"Stick-To-The Roof-Of-Your-Mouth Peanut Butter Sandwiches"
(1 Generous Tablespoon of Peanut Butter Makes 1 Sandwich)

"The Sandwiches:

1 tablespoon peanut butter
1 tablespoon finely chopped celery
catsup

Mix peanut butter and celery. Butter bread and spread with catsup. Add peanut butter mixture.

1 tablespoon chunky peanut butter
1 tablespoon chopped raisins

Mix and spread on raisin bread.

1 tablespoon creamy peanut butter
2 tablespoons chopped apples

Mix and spread on white or dark bread.

1 tablespoon crunchy peanut butter
Banana slices

Spread 1/2 the peanut butter on slice of white or wheat bread. Lay slices of banana on top. Spread second slice of white bread with peanut butter and cover bananas."

Cooking with your children and Grandchildren can be such fun. Also it teaches them to cook and be self sufficient later in life. Both my son and daughter are the cooks in their family. They say learning and cooking with me started them on this path. They both enjoy cooking and now have their own recipes.

I learned from my Mom and both of my Grandmothers. They were such fun times and I have so many great memories. Helping my own children helped complete the circle. Now my son and daughter are teaching their children to cook.

Now here's a new twist! Would have never thought of catsup as an ingredient with peanut butter. Have heard of peanut butter with horseradish, though. The horseradish is supposed to help a weight watcher by breaking down the fats in the peanut butter during digestion when eaten together. Whether this is bunk or not, I don't know. Have tried the combination and have found it to be neither repulsive or extremely palatable. Some use peanut butter in a chili recipe. Have not tried that one as we favor a more traditional style chili recipe we have been making for many years.

The first Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich recipe appeared in 1901. It was written by Julia David Chandler in "The Boston Cooking School Magazine of Culinary Sciences & Domestic Economics". It was served at fancy parties and high teas.

Recipe: "For variety, some day try making little sandwiches, or bread fingers of three layers of thin sliced bread and two of filling, one of peanut paste and currant or crab-apple jelly for the other."
