(from the Lewistown Gazette, Lewistown, Pennsylvania, November 29, 1860)

Ingredients:

1/2 lb. butter
6 eggs
1 pint good sweet milk, or sweet cream
1 lb. grated sugar
1 fresh orange

Instructions:

Take half a pound of butter, six eggs, a pint of good sweet milk, or, better still, of sweet cream, one pound of grated sugar and a fresh orange. Rub the butter and sugar to a cream, add the eggs well beaten, and the juice and pulp of the orange; stir the whole well together for ten minutes and bake.

Since citrus fruit is plentiful this time of year...

My note - I would add the zest of the orange too and bake this in a water bath.
