Note: commercial gunmakers sold to whomever it was legal to do business with. There is at least one CS contract with JE Barnett that went into Union hands when the Confederates did not pay on time.

US Consul FH Morse reported to the Secretary of War on November 6, 1861:

"I have the satisfaction of informing you that one of the gun manufacturers here who had a contract with the rebels running to March (1862) has had a difficulty with them, broken the contract, and will hereafter send his guns, Enfield rifles, to New York on his own account. His name is Barnett and his rifles stand very well here."

There were hundreds of thousands of this model imported for our War, and you will certainly find one to your liking. Don't be in too much of a hurry - look and learn.

I saw that Enfield last week but then saw this thread and didn't want to appear to be "poaching." Late Wednesday afternoon I called them with some questions about it and to see if it'd either been purchased, a deposit put on it, etc. When they said no, and as it'd been 5 days since your original post, I assumed (wrongly it appears now) that you'd decided not to purchase it or had lost interest in it. Sorry If I jumped the gun!

While the last pic of the mark on the stock wasn't too clear on their site, I believe it is a "type 2" view mark of the Sinclair Hamilton Company that imported rifles for the Confederacy. I'll know for sure once it's in hand, but it appears to match the markings as shown in the book The English Connection. I'll post pics in a separate thread after I receive it.

I should correct the post above. It was Wednesday morning that I called about this gun, not the afternoon as stated. With work being crazy the last few months and as many calls, etc as I deal with all,day, I was mistaken on my timeline. I apologize.

I believe that mark is the crown over BSAT mark, as described in the seller's listing
