As a general rule I try to avoid impulse purchases. But I never saw that picture of Ol' Combover before. And the story on Spoons Butler in New Orleans is, as they say, lagniappe.

@AndyHall

Sir, when I read the OP and saw the pic of the front cover, I started laughing. The fonts, the 'headlines' - almost bombastic like the cover of the magazines at the checkout counter at the supermarket. Quite unlike the 'serious' covers of other Civil War mags. Almost expected to see something about UFOs or Elvis in the ACW.

Thanks for the laugh!

Well, I bought it at the checkout counter at the supermarket, so. . . .

It's a decent article by Lawrence Lee Hewitt, who I don't know. Not a lot new there for folks who know Farragut's story, but a solid introduction to him for the general reader. Deals mainly with his background and career before he became famous for danming torpedoes and such.

As I seem to remember, this publication is intended to be for exactly that purpose by the publishers of the venerable (?) Civil War Times (Illustrated).
