New Here

There's not much in his fold3 records except hospital records and a couple of pay vouchers. He was wounded somewhere in late 1862 but the records don't say where.
James H Braziel, listed in carded records as James H "Brazil" enlisted at Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County GA on July 16, 1861 for the war. Carded records show James H Brazil was admitted to General Hospital, Camp Winder, Richmond VA on September 28, 1862 and remained absent wounded until September 1863 when he was recorded present on the Sept/Oct 1863 Company Muster Roll.

Although his name is not recorded on any of the other casualty lists I have seen, it seems that James H Braziel was most likely wounded at Crampton's Gap on September 14, 1862. The 16th GA was overrun and nearly surrounded there. I have scoured a ton of sources to compile what I believe is the most accurate casualty data on the regiment throughout the war.

My spreadsheet for Crampton's Gap shows the following casualties in the 16th GA on September 14, 1862:
27 killed, 25 mortally wounded, 14 wounded who escaped (including James H Braziel), 54 wounded and captured, and 92 captured unwounded = 212 total casualties.

By far, it was the highest casualties the 16th Georgia sustained in a single day. And they lost 15 more three days later at Antietam.

Edit to add: It is possible that some cards for a J W "Brazil" were incorrectly filed and are intermixed with the carded records for James H Brazil.

Yeah. I saw that and could only speculate late 1862 for his wounding. I don't recall that the General Hospital, Camp Winder, Richmond VA card said why he was admitted. That leaves open the possibility that he was wounded afterwards although I don't know where that might have been. I figured you or someone else would come along that knew more.

What was left of the regiment - and the brigade for that matter - after Crampton's Gap.....those who escaped every man for himself, They eventually gathered and those who had found their regiments went on to Sharpsburg. So it's possible that he was one of them and was wounded there on September 17. But my bet is Crampton's Gap. IMHO people who criticize McLaws for not getting to Sharpsburg faster, have never been to Crampton's Gap. Or if they have, they must not fully understand what happened there.

Please see the attached medical document on J.H. Braziel. He asked for a pension due to a neck wound.
