Good evening.

Thanks for having me.

My great-great grandfather was John William "Billy" Braziel, born 19 January 1838 in Cobb, Georgia.

I'm fairly certain that he is the man listed in the Gwinnett County Historical Society records as "Braziel, J. W. Company I 16th GA Inf. Reg't."

Does anyone out there have more information on "Billy" Braziel's service?

His siblings seem to have more detailed records available.

After Alonzo came home from the war, he was a scout for a wagon train with a family named McNeel; he eventually settled in Texas.

James survived the war despite a serious bullet wound to the face/neck, applied for a pension due to the wound, and served as a Baptist preacher.

Robert died of smallpox in a federal prison camp.

Thomas was a prisoner of war on May 17, 1863. Captured at Champion Hill, he was received at Ft. Delaware, Delaware, on June 9, 1863, and exchanged July 4, 1863, at Camp Lee, VA.

There's not much in his fold3 records except hospital records and a couple of pay vouchers. He was wounded somewhere in late 1862 but the records don't say where.

Hello from the Prison and Prisoners forum!

I'm not great with Confederate records, but I've got three chapters on the guards from the Reserve Regiments that served at Andersonville in the book I'm working on. You might want to try contacting the UDC (United Daughters of the Confederacy) and see if they have any information on the guys you mentioned. If any of their descendants wanted to join, they would have had to have submitted information about the men in their family who served. One of my biggest resources was letters back and forth between two teenaged guards and their families that were in the UDC's files.
