Notion: unmolested early-war weapon with carry-wear, indicative of issue to a unit stationary and guarding someplace like the forts around DC?
I love it. This is a dumb question and I can not believe i don't know but did they carry them lock facing out or in?

I found it in Arizona. Maybe It went west and just didn't see much action

So pure speculation, perhaps it follow the veteran to whom it was issued?

Just for giggles, draw a radius around where you purchased it and do a Hail Mary graveyard search of union veterans who were assigned to stationary units in 1861.

Or you can go watch Netflix.

PS: take off the butt plate, if you haven't already.

A very nice find for sure! The stock could be a replacement... or the rifle could've gone through a few Arsenal repairs in its life, including sanding and refinishing of the stock. Either way... I would be thrilled to find that for $600!

On a side note... garage/yard sales have been my bread and butter. I've purchased several firearms by just stopping and looking. One that comes to mind is my Springfield model 1873. It's in beautiful original condition, even has case hardening still on the receiver. Only bad thing is somebody sanded the stock, however the cartouches are still there. I also paid $600 and was a great buy for me.

Congrats again on a beautiful gift!

Those are great. I had the carbine version and shot it occasionally. There's something so satisfying in the sounds of it. Kicks like a mule though
