Just received my new book called "From Arlington to Appomattox, Robert E Lees Civil war day by day 1861 to 1865. It's a almanac along the lines of E.B. Longs book called " The Civil War day by day" it describes what Gen Lee was doing every day of the war from April, 1861 to April 14, 1865. Very detailed with copious notes also. The author is Charles R Knight, it was published by Savas Beatie. Highly recommended !

Can you give us the number of pages, including any index or appendices, and how photos may be distributed in the book. Generally, I was curious of the format whether it was similar to a record book such as a journal, naming the place and events of each day, or whether it employed the use of commentary and filled in the day's events with minutia?

The book has a foreword, introduction and acknowledgement. The footnotes are at the bottom of the page which I like very much. It has 12 pages of various photos of General Lees family, his staff officers, various politicians he had to deal with, some places from his life and where he lived also of some of the battlefields he was involved with. It has 4 pages of great maps. The format is like E.B Longs book " The Civil war day by day" it starts on April the 17th 1861 and ends on April the 14th 1865. It is not a journal of his, more of a description of what he was doing each day such as writing letters who he was meeting with, where he went and so on, It has 558 pages. Like I said, very interesting, informative and highly recommended !

That sounds like a very in-depth approach of a major player in all that happened. I had marveled upon a time about other leaders in other wars, and how interesting it would be to follow their day-to-day footsteps to get a clearer picture of the overall. I am glad someone has done this on Lee. Who is going to pick up and do one on Grant, now?
