i was asked by my girlfriend's grandma to help her out gathering info on a rifle that belonged to her father. I have found so far it is a Potsdam musket, but as far as the markings I'm stumped and everything else is pointing to the civil war. any help would be great. #1 is the butt stock #2 is on the side. waiting for other pics to transfer over to computer so I can upload them. thanks in advance.

Welcome Broncobandit!

What you have shown is not an American Civil War imported "Potsdam", and as noted it is much earlier. Some of the barrel proofs are British, as is the muzzle end photo, which appears to be Brown Bess pattern. I am looking forward to additional photos because what you have is extremely interesting! The folks here will truly try to assist you as much as they can.

Welcome From The Heart Of Dixie. What you have is a Prussian Model 1809 Infantry Musket (aka "Potsdam Musket") .71 caliber. Prussia began large-scale conversion from flintlock to percussion circa 1839, becoming the M1809/39, but research indicates conversions may have started as early as 1831. These weapons saw service during the Napoleonic Wars and many of these were acquired during the American Civil War and were used by both sides during that conflict; this would also be considered correct for revolutionary Texas. The name "Potsdam" comes from the guns made at the Prussian Potsdam arsenal, but other manufacturing locations noted are Saarn, Neisse, Suhl, and Dresden

Hello and welcome to the talk forum from Southeast Missouri on the banks of the muddy Mississippi River. That is a nice Prussian Flintlock Musket. I like the look of it, I wish I owned one. Thanks for posting.
