Yep - family seems to have the mistaken idea he was a Captain. Possibly it was one of those fake Confederate veteran ranks which commonly confuse people. Edited to reflect that.

Looks like John H Taylor may have also been "blessed" with one of those fake Captain ranks too?

Company E was raised at Lynchburg in March 1861 and joined the Regiment in Winchester the following month where they were sworn into service on 29 April 1861. The men were from Lincoln County (became Moore County). They were nicknamed "The Lynchburg Rangers". John H. TAYLOR, a prominent Southern gentleman of the old school, outfitted the Company at his own expense. Officers at the organization were: Capt., Dr. Ezekiel Y. SALMON; 1st Ltn., Thomas H. Maybe that 3d Lieut William F Taylor instead of the one we were thinking? Or less likely, Jasper N Taylor?

TAYLOR, Jasper Newton Sgt. *Born 8 March 1838 at Lynchburg. Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Lynchburg, aged 22; discharged on account of chronic sore eyes, 29 July 61. He re-enlisted in Forrest's Escort Company to end of war. He was in battles of Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Brice's Crossroads and Harrisburg, the raid to Memphis, the battle of Johnsonville, Spring Hill, Franklin and Murfreesboro (Hood's campaign) operating against Wilson's Raid in 1865 until the fall of Selma, AL, when he was made the last Confederate prisoner in the record of the Forrest Escort. He surrendered as Pvt. at Citronelle, AL, 4 May 1865 and paroled at Gainesville, AL. After the war he graduated in medicine at the University of Tennessee in 1872 and practiced in Lynchburg. He was the first post master appointed by President Cleveland for four years.*

So, I've gotten confused. Who is Sallie to this man? 2nd wife of father?

The photo looks possible, given age, and I still feel like that hair belongs to a Forrest soldier, which would be another plus.

Edit: William Ford Taylor had a daughter named Susan, and Sallie can be a nickname for Susan.

Was this by chance the Dr Harris L Smith estate auction at Jackson? If so, the picture is most likely not original to the Smith family because Smith had obviously collected many unrelated items of Civil War memorabilia, so no clues there, unless there are other materials in the box which have names on them.

If the photo is of William Ford Taylor, one plausible path for it to end in the collection of an unrelated person near Jackson is through Sue Solomon Parkes Paulk, a descendant of William's daughter Susan. Sue Solomon Paulk died childless in Nashville.

Thanks everyone for being so helpful and posting the know images for comparison. I'll try to take a better picture of the image. That was the auction in Jackson they over looked the images and sold them with a small soldiers saddle bag hymn book. Most of the stuff went high some of the stuff was for sure fake and some of it I wasn't sure about. I also got a Dag of a lady I will share. In case some runs across a know image of Sallie and maybe by a long shot it could be her in the image and not some one else. Thanks everyone that has posted and helping solve this mistory of history

Okay I hope these photos help! As I am not the best photographer! The image is in good shape no damage or peeling. One if his eyes almost looks slightly darker than the other I wounded of it could be chronic sore eye or just the way it appears in the image?

This William Ford Taylor was the son of John H and Sallie Strange Taylor so Sallie would have been his mother. EDIT to ADD - I see where the other article lists his mother as Elizabeth Ford? So was Sallie Strange the later wife of John H Taylor or are there multiple John H Taylors associated with Turney's 1st TN?
