Need help Quick at local auction ! Confederate?

That looks like "Sallie Taylor." There was a Sallie Taylor who was a Ward Matron at Jackson Hospital in Richmond in Oct-Dec 1864. Might she have owned the image?

That first letter is definitely not a "T" as it is unlike the "T" In Taylor. Has to either be a "L" or an "S" not too many people named Lallie so Im going with Sallie.

Sorry about that....you posted the same time as me. A couple of possibilities based on geography.....

Sallie Shelby Ford Taylor was married to William Fletcher Taylor (b.1835 in Huntsville, Al; d. 1917 in Memphis) Wm Fletcher Taylor was a Liet Colonel in the 7th Tennessee and possibly part of Nathan Bedford Forrest's Cavalry?

Sallie W Strange Taylor was married to Captain John H Taylor (b. 1830 in AL; d. 1918 in Memphis) No idea in what regiment he served?

So can you give us a hint.....now that the lot has sold?
Any geographical info? Like where is the auction? Where if you know did the stuff come from? Any other items in the box that have other names on them?

Just because I don't believe in stupid questions or "observations," just check and see if it is "Callie" Taylor. I think you guys are right about Sallie but just wanted to throw that out just to offer possibilities on a very great find!!

Thanks for your help guys! The auction was in Jackson Tn right in between Memphis and Nashville. The 7th tenn fought here in a small 3 hour battle at Salem cemetery I believe. A grave of 75 unknown confederate soldiers is there

That exact hair and beard were a fad in the 7th TN because of Forrest but is that the right coat for a cavalry officer? I know nothing about uniforms but I know we have some experts around here somewhere.

I know nothing about uniforms but I know we have some experts around here somewhere.

I'm far from an expert, but his frock coat is pretty much the standard CSA regulation for an officer of any branch of service: Infantry, Artillery or Cavalry.

It looks like Sallie and William Fletcher had a whole bunch of sons who hung about the Memphis area. I'm gonna do some poking and see if I can place any descendants near Jackson. She died in Memphis - I'm seeing 1932 not 1918, will have to find sources.

What about the "other" Sallie - Sallie W Strange Taylor. Shes the one that was married to John H Taylor who was a Captain in Co E 1st TN. Maybe someone with Fold 3 can check and see what rank both Wm F Taylor and John H Taylor enlisted at? That might help narrow it donw. I think John H and his wife Sallie Strange may have had only one child- a daughter Laura?

Laura, William Fletcher Taylor enlisted as a 2nd lt.

I have an engraving of him in JP Young's history of the 7th Tn and unless he grew out his beard in the latter part of the war and looks very different with different hair, I don't think it's the same man.

I agree @Allie looks like its not Wm F Taylor. Our guy in the unknown image seems to have blue or light grey eyes? And Wm Fletcher Taylor seems to have dark eyes? Something about the shape of the skull - cheeks and eye sockets and the hairline seems similar though? @TNcollector we really need a better picture of your newly acquired image.

Okay, I'm not finding a John H Taylor in Turney's 1st TN on fold3. Possibly his records are under some other unit. Can anyone find them?

How about Capt Joshua Marion Taylor of Jackson, daughter Sallie Taylor Gregory?

Edit: I obtained the information that this man was a Captain from a story attached to his family's tree. From fold 3 records it appears his highest rank was Corporal.
