I was hoping for any information posters might have on the Gallagher Carbine with respect to its operation and ammunition and especially who was issued these weapons. The serial number is 3635. Thanks

Flayderman says: "2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th Ohio, 13th Tennessee and 3rd West Virginia. Total made, 17,728(5,000 chambered for 56=52 Spenser.)

Thanks, again. Does this site provide records only for arms made at Springfield, Mass.? This Gallagher was made by a Philadelphia company.

Springfield Research was a company owned and operated by Frank Mallory. As owner/operator he published 4 volumes of serial number books. The serial numbers were the result of his work in the National Archives recording arms serial numbers as they showed up in official documents as to "who, what, when, and where". When Frank was diagnosed as being terminally ill he sold the entire operation to another individual who has shut down public access to the records Frank collected. This is the short version as there is much more that could be said regarding the operation today.

I have seen the set and I don't remember much being recorded regarding the Gallager Carbine.
J.

There are quite a few Gallagher carbines listed but no hit on this number. It does fall among a group of 4th Tenn mounted Infantry guns but that does not prove it was issued to the 4th.
