Hello, I need help identifying the insignia this Soldier is wearing on his Frock Coat.
Thanks!

I am not sure they have any special meaning. Of and on men would add unique details to rhein uniform.

I believe this to be early war carry over from a militia unit. The frock is certainly US issue, with functional cuffs and a high early war collar, which would be invariably tailored down, if worn in the field. The sword appears to be an NCO sword and not a musician, as it has the clam shell guards. Hardee hat is indicative of early war as well, though he may be sporting his dress uniform for the photograph. He is either a sergeant major or quartermaster sergeant, but the two "straight" bars and rocker throw me.

He also appears to be wearing dark blue trousers, indicative of US Army regulations pre/early war.

He does not have a company letter, so a regimental rank is certainly implied; I'll go with sergeant major.

Welcome to CivilWarTalk @veracruz Happy to have you aboard! :bounce::wavespin::bounce:

Great image! Looks like our uniform experts have provided the information you were looking for.

Can you tell us what you know about the image? Is it a family photo? Any idea of the identity of the finely dressed gentleman? And/or state he is from?

Looking forward to more of your posts. Again, welcome aboard.
Laura

Hi Laura, unfortunately he did not come with any ID. I have not removed him from the case to see if there is any thing written in side. When I return home I may give it a try or wait until the next show in Richmond, Va. and get an expert to help me do it. It would be great to know who he was.

This is a very unique rank insignia and the breakdown is the 3 lower chevron SGT, the 3 horizontal quartermaster. the vertical lines inside, Divisional, and the upper arch stripe is a SGT Major stripe. The hat insignia is Infantry and from what I see with the image being reversed is appears to be a 15 or 51 plus he has a great Jeff Davis hat pin and I think he has a plum on the top. Even if there is no name behind the image there can't be but a hand full of soldiers that have these ranks and he hat info will be the tell tell.

Wow amazing. Looks like a 15 when reversed. Can you point out the hat pin? Maybe an imageof what it looks like in another picture? And is the plume the dark shadowy part on top of the crown of the hat?
