I'm in need of repro buttons for a 1954-style coat for regt. of mounted riflemen. They are a smaller size (don't have dimensions). I posted a pic of this model (Smithsonian) I have checked the sutlers, including button baron. Anybody who can help?
thx

I'm not sure the small size rifleman buttons have ever been reproduced. Cool project though, I love the green trim MSJ, and I have wondered if any of the few volunteer Mounted Rifle units got custom jackets made like a couple of the dragoon regiments.

The buttons look to be about the same size as the buttons on the cuff, and I'm sure many of the sutlers sell the U.S. buttons as cuff sized.

Are you portraying an officer or an enlisted man? In 1854 regulations changed such that enlisted men in virtually all branches were to wear the general service button of an eagle with the shield (no letter) on its's chest. Officers were supposed to retain the button with the letter on the shield. If portraying an enlisted man you could get away with using the reproduction general service buttons that are readily available and still be historically accurate.
