Need A Little Help With This One

Hope someone has better eyes and computer skills than I. I was offered this huge photo of a group of old CS Vets. It's out of an Alabama estate and it has some fading. Its a great old photo but I need to see if anyone can make out the unit info on the flag. All I can make out is Co D -------- Reg. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It looks more like "Co. C" to me, but I can't make out any more.

Could also be "Co. G." To me, it's blank between those letters and "Reg't."

I opened your image in a couple of different graphic programs and played with the contrast, back lighting, histogram, etc. settings and do think that I see "Co. G" and there is a smudge in the area that probably designates the regiment number but I can't say that I see any definite ID; my best impression is that it might be "1st" regiment.

The pattern of the flag is that of the 3rd National flag which was not adopted by the Confederacy until the month before the Appomattox surrender so I wonder if it was actually carried by the regiment during the War or if it was produced and presented to the regiment's veterans years later.

Does the name of the estate give you any way to trace back through old rosters and the Compiled Military Service Records for an ID of the regiment?

Update : I did a little digging on the internet, looking for Confederate Veterans holding a 3rd National flag to see if I could find an image of your group photo but, haven't found it. No way it could be this famous Gettysburg flag from the 8th Alabama, I guess…Company C of the 8th was the Alex Stephens Guards from Mobile and surrounds…

Thats pretty cool. Kinda surprised Gettysburg would have a postwar reunion flag on display.
