I'd like to see the record for:

Joseph Wooden
43 MO Inf Co E

I know when he joined up and that he was discharged in a hospital. I'm real curious is he was wounded (or saw any combat; think he did) or just got sick.

Thanks a bunch.

Yeah, not sure what to make of his POW record. Captured and paroled on the same day?
You can read about the battle of Glasgow using Google. The confederates paroled all the Union prisoners on the same day. My guess is they just didn't have the ability to deal with prisoners. The confederates were part of Price's invasion so I think more like guerilla forces than regular army.

I'm curious how they would have diagnosed anemia back then, considering they didn't use a microscope in the US or understand about hemoglobin!
Probably just if one looked pale. They had a lot of catch words that really didn't have much meaning: e.g. dropsy. That just means you have swelling. It's not what kills you but they put it down as cause of death often. Nineteenth-century medicine was really quite primitive. Lots of doctors didn't even believe in germ theory yet.

I do know they'd recognize small pox and I'm a bit surprised he survived as long as he did after that (died 1906). I wonder if he lost sight in that one eye.
