If you're ever in NYC or Washington DC be sure to visit the National Museum of the American Indian. I've only been to the NYC branch, but the one here has an incredible array of items from many tribal nations. The layout and design of the museum is top notch as well. I was lucky enough when I was visiting they had a demonstration of a rain dance. Very cool place to visit. I learned so much about Native culture.

I enjoy going to the Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida in Gainesville.since they moved to the new building they greatly expanded the permenent exhibits and one of is on the native Americans that populated florida.when people think of them they tend to think of just the Seminole and the Micosukee's.these two tribes actually came out of Georgia and Alabama and are the newcomers to the state.in Florida there were actually 38 tribes and 22 minor tribes that spoke the Timucua language.
The oldest tribe in Florida was the Calusa Indians, who dated back 14,000 years.
I can post more as I have been learning a lot about these tribes as I have really digging into Florida history.

The DC museum is not only architecturally truly beautiful, incorporating many details of Southwestern native architecture, but it contains a wonderful cafe which serves only native American foods in a wide variety, ranging from quinoa salad to buffalo burger. IMHO, your best lunch deal on the Mall!

This post reminded me of a Native American Chief whose name I can't remember who was a big factor in keeping the peace between settlers in GA and the Natives when the border between them was on the Oconee river - East Ga. I went to look him up and this led me to lots of information on the history of Native Americans in GA - of which I was completely ignorant... a history I find to be as rich and interesting as any Civil War saga, and similar in that we all know who is going to lose. So I never found out my guy's name, but it is sure to come up.

Right off the bat I see 5 of those Georgia tribes were native to florida.the most notable are the Apalachee who were centered at the big bend in Florida on the Gulf of mexico.the timucua were probably the largest tribe and they were in N.E. Florida all the way down to below Daytona Beach.thereally were originally about 50,000 of them but they fell to all the European disease that the Spanish brought over.the last 80 or so left Florida when the Spanish left in 1757 for Cuba and they eventually died in Cuba and became extinct.the other tribes were the Yamasee, the Guale and the Mickosukee.
P.s. I hate the spell checker it destroys Indian names.

Stand Watie lead the pro-confederate faction of the Cherokee Nation, the Unionist (Pin) Cherokees tended to follow John Ross, the Watie/ Ross fued goes back to the Ridge Affair and the Nation tended to be divided over it. The Cherokee as a Nation were as fractured over the Civil War as was the US.

Still divides! A few years ago the Cherokees cleaned out the descendants of their slaves from tribal rolls - the US had demanded they accept their slaves as tribal members when they re-negotiated treaties after the CW. Some really were, too! However, there had also been a dumping of other non-Indian names off the rolls as well - they had had to accept a number of white settlers into the nation before they were run out of Georgia - but that didn't grab headlines as much.
