I am convinced this image I posted is not N.B. either, but as some think may be a relative. So if anyone knows how to find out and thinks it is of value in time to do so then please...go for it. But I am not specifically requesting this to be done right now either. Perhaps in time after this circulates for a while someone may know more of whom it is...IF? a member of the Forrest family.

What's the provenance? That may be your best bet at figuring out who it is, if it's a family member with no other photos.

If this is indeed him, his hair looks much lighter here, especially compared to his beard.

I just ran across this photo that looks very much like him. I've never seen this one before.

Both are him! The bottom one is a favorite of mine - just inside this frame in the lower right hand corner is a bullet hole! It was taken after Chickamauga, where Forrest received some sort of wound - unclear what or where - but it may have been the upper arm...and the coat seems to show that!

IMHO, that is NOT Nathan Forrest.

I recall reading an account of Forrest's hair remained dark throughout his life but one artist's painted rendition of him in post-war years shows him with thick grey hair. I do not know who made this painting or when. I do not know if it was done while General Forrest sat in a chair in the same room as the artist at time of creation.

NB Forrest indeed had greying hair and a darker beard. He was asked about it once and said it was because he did a lot more thinking than talking which is why his head turned grey and his beard did not.

I believe that photos were often doctored to facilitate printing at this time. I apologize for the last image....

I was wondering if the hair and beard had also been altered? I'd always assumed it hadn't been, but photos taken after that one show different aging. I'm pretty sure Wyeth and some other early biographers agreed he'd gone grey early but not white-headed!

By the way, the second portrait I posted by Marschall is rather unique - it shows a hand! Forrest almost never had a photo or portrait done showing his hands, or if they showed they were folded or had gloves. This is because he had long, slender fingers - rather dainty - and was embarrassed by them.

The individual in your photograph has chin whiskers that come up flush to his lower lip. Forrest does not; he has prominent patches to the sides and in centre does not quite reach the lip. Facial hair does not normally spread that late in life due to hormone decrease, though I suppose there are always exceptions.

It looks like I have reason to make another entry to this thread. I agree with the notation about the whiskers nearly or completely covering the lips. Whom ever this is would for sure get a lot of food in the ole whiskers while eating! Also I have no provenance on this outside of I bought it off ebay in 2011 for $3.75 plus postage and it came from the state of Illinois. After I got it I tossed it in a drawer for a few years. It was around 2014 when I shown it to the fellow who recommended I get it analyzed. I have to take into account this individual collects only Civil War Military images too. In other words, in uniform only. So this here is way out of his area of expertise. I'm glad I finally got around to posting it here too where I received not only many opinions from experts...but also a lot of additional info about the known images of Forrest too. Also, as a side note, I personally find post mortem photography to be morbid and did not enjoy suggesting this as a possibility either. But it was not uncommon in terms of being a " family affair " from the infancy of photography all the way up into the early 20th century. I also learned that these photographers often used a lot of " tricks of the trade " in their artwork to enhance the physical appearance of the body. I'm confident the historians and researchers of General Forrest would have discovered if any images were taken of him after his passing as well as I have great confidence if any were taken they would have been well documented. I hope everyone is OK with the comments I made about post-mortem photography because like I said, this practice to me is morbid and mention of this may cause a queasy stomach or two so sorry folks, if this happens.

Not to worry. We've had some threads with postmortem photography. (Though I admit to being a little thrown off by it.)
