Today's Monument Monday being so near the anniversary of the December 13, 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, I thought it appropriate to revisit one of my favorite monuments on that field, dedicated to then-Sergeant Richard Rowland Kirkland of the 2nd South Carolina, who near here and despite the warnings of his officers carried canteens filled with water to aid the many Federal wounded who had fallen on the opposite side of the Stone Wall, earning him the title The Angel of Marye's Heights. Unfortunately Kirkland, by then a lieutenant, was killed the following year in the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia.
