In the years after the battle the rocks of Devil's Den became a magnet for locals and others to carve their names and other graffiti into the giant rocks. In 1894, the government took over the Den area and chiseled away most of the carvings. The chisel marks are quite easily seen today. In many photographs of Table Rock taken in the 1880's the name Maurice Fox is plainly seen. As author/historian/LBG Tim Smith describes in a great Gettysburg Daily post, Maurice Fox was a Gettysburg local who happened to be an invalid and could not possibly have done the carving himself. One of his friends must have been the actual "carver". In the collage below, is an 1880's image that shows the carving with a photo of Maurice Fox to the right. The bottom image is a photo I took that clearly shows the chisel marks where his name was removed.
