During the Civil War army NCOs wore chevrons with the point downward, however both U.S. Marines and C.S. Marines wore their chevrons pointed up. When looking at Civil War images show upward pointed chevrons one must assume it might be a marine and not a soldier.

I have never found a reason that marines wore upward pointed chevrons. I think it may have been a hold over from when the U.S. Army wore upward pointed chevrons.

Good question.
Ive always bern interested in uniform details and their vsristions & history. But THIS is one thing that Ive never made any sense behind the differences. And I know little of Marine uniforms of any period.
I always wondered why even in WW2 the Yanks had their chevron pointed UP but the British Tommies were pointed down.

The U.S. Army originally had chevrons pointing up but had switched to chevorn pointed down by the time of the Civil War. In the 20th century the chevrons were pointed up again. I have never seen a reason given for the changes from up to down to up again.

It had become the style. I can't give you an exact year, but it would have been during the period from 1900 to 1817. The US has never really followed British uniform design, except in the WWI period, when we wore the British style uniform, with our own additions.
