Maps

Universities of Alabama and Virginia both have pretty good websites for southern stuff.

M35gibson,

Maps are not my forte, but I will give you a list of map sources.

-The American Civil War Homepage
sunsite.utk.edu/civil-war/warweb
After clicking onto this site, go to "Battles and Campaigns", this will bring you to "regional or general". The 3rd selection is "Civil War Battle Maps Locator" Click on this, which will take you to Search for Civil War Battles, by "MapMuse's Interactive Map and Directory Locator Service." Go to the green drawing of the U.S, click on the site of your choice. You are on your own from there.

-Civil War Maps - Related Resources
memory.loc.gov
Click on this site, it will take you to the Library of Congress American Memory. In the search box to the left, type in civil war maps. A listing of 2,109 maps pops up. The LOC is my favorite site!

-American Civil War history timelines battlle map pictures
americancivilwar.com
Click on this site, go to Featured.Indexes. Click on State Battle Maps. The next page, on the left is a listing of all states involved in the war. Click on your choice.

-Civil War-Resources on the Civil War in American History
academicinfo.net/usindcw
Click on this site, the next page lists a multitude of sources that may be helpful to your search.

My parents gave me the gargantuan book, The Official Military Atlas of the Civil War. It has 821 maps - which include topographical maps, 106 engravings and 209 drawings.

Hope this helps!

O.k., let's see if I got this right....you downloaded a virtual goldmine of maps, nearly 3000 to be exact. Now you are whining about how long it will take to open all of them.

No problem! Open 5 maps a day and you'll be done in 8 years and 3 months!

Glutton for punishment, aren't you?

Just kidding.

You gotta get control of this monster of a goldmine.
Is there a way to divide these maps, without opening them but by title only, into theatres of war? Example: Eastern theatre, Trans-Mississippi theatre and the Western theatre.

From there you can subdivide each theatre into just about any catagory imaginable.

Good luck on your map hunt.

And if you are looking for sympathy, you won't find it in the land of BBF.

im slowly
opening and filing:) problem being, some of the maps are the old drawing, crude, and hard to read,,i think im looking at a map of gettysburg, when its really bull run,,
but thats my own fault, for not labeling them when i downloaed them.
