I am wondering if anyone happens to own all of these books and if so, what differences there are between them.

"The Maps of Gettysburg" by Brad Gottfried

"The Gettysburg Campaign Alas" by Phil Laino

"Gettysburg, Day Two: A Study in Maps" Imhof

"Gettysburg, July 2: The Ebb and Flow of Battle"

Is any one of these the preferred map set? Thank you!

I believe that the last 2 titles are out of print? I'd love to have them, but the price is a bit steep.

There is quite a difference between the Gottfried and Laino books. I like both of them, but prefer the greater quantity and more granular Laino maps. Because Laino has many more maps, you can obviously examine more battle action. The Gottfried maps have better text descriptions even though I know that people don't buy these books for the text. In Laino's second edition, there are various text mistakes, including repeating the same text on different pages. Laino admitted to me that they were mistakes and mentioned that I was the first to mention them. That's another indicator of how few people read the text.

I've got these.

I've used all 3 at various times and have often compared one to the other to see their particular takes. Gottfried is very good and is probably what 90+% of people want and need. Laino drills down into more detail but is probably more than what the average reader is interested in. Imhof limits his book to July 2 (obviously) and is a good resource in its own right.

I tend to use Gottfried and Laino quite a bit. But Imhof is a sentimental favorite and I've been known to refer to it as well, especially when cross-referencing with the other books.

No one purchases Laino for the text.

Gottfried is Big Picture. Laino is Close up Picture with about 300 Close up illustrations of the battle. Agree with the reviews above.

I ran AddALL lists for the last 2 books using their used/out of print database.

For the Imhof volume, the below was actually the lowest priced entry of 22 at $90 plus shipping of $5.00. If it is as described (signed first edition, limited run of 1500, hardbound, as new condition), that might not be bad in comparison to the other choices.

Below are the rest of the copies on AbeBooks. The one at the bottom is said to be "New."

The Woods volume is a whole different kettle of fish. There are 5 entries with 3 appearing to describe the same book on different seller platforms. It goes for $230 with the other two entries going for $200 and $230.

I wish the AddALL lists would copy over, but they no longer do. :frown:

If you want to buy, just 1, buy the Gottfried book. It's the least expensive to start and has nice, slick pages. Hope this helps.

Do you think there is anything in the Imhof that is not covered now in the other two atlases?
