“USMC class of 1835 (cavalry). Fought in the Mexican War attaining the rank of colonel. Saw service primarily in the western theater of the Civil War, rising to division command. Resumed his law career after the war and was active in Alabama politics.”

Another new arrival appeared a few weeks later. Major General Thomas Carmichael Hindman arrived in Chattanooga on August 13 (1863) from Richmond, bearing orders authorizing him to take command of Maj. Gen. Jones M. Withers division in Leonidas Polk's corps. Withers was a capable combat officer who had seen plenty of service - when healthy. Unfortunately, as the war continued he grew increasingly less so. He was absent for much of 1863, his division left in the hands of its senior brigadier, J. Patton Anderson, of Florida. Withers submitted his resignation that July, but agreed to stay on with the condition that he could assume a less active role. He was promptly transferred to district command in Mobile. Hindman, who was then on detached duty in Richmond, was sent as his replacement.

I'm very interested by the relatively unknown commanders, Withers being one of them. Does anyone know if there's a full biography of him available?

Thank you, though I was hoping for a proper book, rather than a Wikipedia article.

There is no full biography, but there is a profile in Ezra J. Warner's Generals in Gray: Lives of the Confederate Commanders.

I looked around a little bit, and it appears Jones Withers' papers were stolen, explaining the lack of any biography.
